Today is the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a solemn day when we gather together to honor the memory of transgender people whose lives were ended by violence this past year, and shine a light on the routine and systemic violence faced by transgender people. You can find an event near you, which may be happening today or this weekend.
This year we also mark the loss of Leslie Feinberg, a transgender activist and author of Stone Butch Blues. Feinberg’s life was ended by illness and not violence, but her work to end oppression and support everyone’s right to self-determination continues to resonate beyond the transgender and LGBT communities, and into our society at large.
Feinberg’s last words were, “Remember me as a revolutionary communist.” Tonight, I suggest we take a moment to do exactly that.
