In today’s unintentionally campy news, a Utah lawmaker has introduced a bill that would officially refer to all same-sex marriages as “Pairages.”
Referring to same-sex couples as “Pairied” (or whatever) is obviously a desperate attempt to cling to heterosexism, but what if same-sex couples claim it as our own? What if we used Pairage as a way to signal a certain legal status, but acknowledge that in many very real ways same-sex relationships are different than “traditional” marriages?
Or, replace the whole contentious set of terms with something more descriptive. Perhaps “Tax-Break Buddy?”
